How to prepare for studying in Japan: 5 steps from language to visa

To study Japanese in Japan and then move on to a vocational school or university, students need three things: entry-level Japanese, academic documents and financial documents.

1. Choose an intake and a school

Japanese language schools usually take students in January, April, July and October. SHI Global represents TCJ Japanese Language School (Shinjuku, Tokyo) and Hiki Academy (Saitama). See Study in Japan.

2. Reach the entry level

Most schools ask for JLPT N5 or at least 150 hours of Japanese study.

3. Prepare documents

  • High school diploma and transcripts
  • Japanese study certificate or JLPT/NAT-TEST result
  • Passport, photos, CV and study purpose
  • Sponsor’s income and savings documents

4. Certificate of Eligibility (COE)

The school applies to the Immigration Services Agency for the COE on the student’s behalf. Screening usually takes 2–3 months.

5. Visa and departure

With the COE, the student applies for a student visa at the Japanese Embassy or Consulate.

Part-time work

Students may work only after receiving permission to engage in activities outside their status: up to 28 hours a week during term and 8 hours a day during long school holidays, never in bars or night clubs (source: Kobe University). Attendance and study results come first.
